The estimate is based on the Baltic Sea AIS (Automatic Identification System). The raw AIS-data was extracted from the database and sampled over a period of one calendar month with an interval of one hour. In other words: at every even hour the number of ships at each grid cell (resolution 0.01 decimal degrees) was summed up over a period of one month. The main work in creating the dataset has been done by the Finnish Meteorological Institute, which takes care of all the computations. HELCOM has transformed the results of the calculations into raster grids suitable for map use. The estimate is created as a side-product of the ShipNoDeff-system, which estimates the amount of airborne pollution caused by ship traffic in the Baltic.
NOTE: This estimate obviously underestimates the actual number of ships passing through a certain grid cell as some ships will pass the grid cell within the one hour gap. However, the estimate does describe the spatial variation of traffic density in the Baltic Sea.
